Location: Joe Farmer Recreation Center A/B Room, Allen, TX
Class Topics
September
Qigong: Ba Duan Jin, also known as the Eight Pieces of Silk Brocade, was originally developed to help ancient Chinese warriors become stronger and heal for battle but soldiers soon realized that it was effective far beyond the battlefield. Not only did the practice give the soldiers greater physical strength, but it increased their focus, resilience, and sense of internal peace. We will learn 3 different styles of Ba Duan Jin which range from easy, to medium to intense. Movements can be adapted to fit each student's range of motion and strength.
October/November
Qigong: The Five Animal Frolics, the oldest known qigong/tai chi form. This is where it all began with ancient practitioners observing and imitating movements in nature. It is also the more playful side of qigong, especially with the Monkey Frolics. Each week we will focus on a different animal. We’ll tap into the fierceness of our inner tiger, cultivate the tranquility of the deer, enjoy the playfulness of the monkey, become grounded like a bear, and cultivate the confidence and courage to soar like a bird. The 6th week, we will do a form that incorporates all five animals.
December
Qigong: Metta Flows,, we will incorporate metta meditations with our flows which cultivate feelings of gratitude and compassion while lowering stress and anxiety. I will use the same verbal cues used in studies at Stanford University which showed that metta meditations increase compassionate behavior and was correlated with positive changes in regions of the brain which govern compassion and goodwill.
